Landscape Lighting Transformer Maintenance

To insure reliable landscape lighting operation, yearly transformer maintenance is a must. Follow these steps:

  1. Pull the transformer plug.
  2. Check that the GFCI receptacle “trips” and “resets” correctly.
  3. Check to make sure the weatherproof cover is NOT damaged and is correctly installed.
  4. Clean out debris and insects from inside the transformer. Tip: place an ant bait station inside the transformer to keep ants from building nests inside the transformer.
  5. Check the operation of the timer in the landscape light transformer. Replace timer if it is defective. Check that the “time of day” is set correctly.
  6. Check the operation of the photo-cell on the transformer. Tip: corrosion or a cloudy appearance at the photo-cell eye is a good indicator that the photo-cell is defective. Replace a defective photo-cell.
  7. Check for loose connections at the transformer low voltage connector terminals.
  8. Call your local lighting installer if you are not comfortable doing yearly transformer maintenance.
