To insure reliable landscape lighting operation, yearly transformer maintenance is a must. Follow these steps:
- Pull the transformer plug.
- Check that the GFCI receptacle “trips” and “resets” correctly.
- Check to make sure the weatherproof cover is NOT damaged and is correctly installed.
- Clean out debris and insects from inside the transformer. Tip: place an ant bait station inside the transformer to keep ants from building nests inside the transformer.
- Check the operation of the timer in the landscape light transformer. Replace timer if it is defective. Check that the “time of day” is set correctly.
- Check the operation of the photo-cell on the transformer. Tip: corrosion or a cloudy appearance at the photo-cell eye is a good indicator that the photo-cell is defective. Replace a defective photo-cell.
- Check for loose connections at the transformer low voltage connector terminals.
- Call your local lighting installer if you are not comfortable doing yearly transformer maintenance.
